What good is a library blog?

January 9, 2007 · 2 Comments

Why?

The Good: More people are getting used to using blogs, so it will fit with that group.  Will show that the library is a ‘current’ resource…familiar with today’s technology.

The Less-than-Good: Another thing to do and keep track of.  Another resource for students to learn.  Splits students away from the library webpage.

I think the question needs to be re-framed. It is not “what good is a library blog?” but rather
“What good use might one make of a blog?” If setting one up and having a good conversation with fellow staff members is one outcome, I think it’s well worth the time and effort. Ideas can be built to move us to appropriate actions.

I visited the blogsite yesterday eager to begin the conversation, and read Eileen’s comment. All I could think of to add was “ditto,” which wasn’t worth adding.

I thought about the new blog this morning, again eager to post something of interest, start a provocative conversation, etc., but couldn’t think of anything appropriate or of interest to us all. It occured to me that I was spending too much time trying to think of something to say, just for the sake of using the blog.

Another thought is that, although I read and enjoy various blogs on a daily basis, they are written by and commented on by people I have no chance of meeting or talking with in person. If I come across something worth sharing here I might e-mail it to y’all, but I actually would prefer to talk face to face, i.e., have a real, live conversation.

So, while I still want to explore the blog possibilities, and I’m sure one of you, being more creative than I am, will come up with something that will catch all of our interest and enthusiasm, I wonder if one possibility of making this a viable blog is to expand the audience – set it up college-wide?
